Stonington commission approves Mystic butcher shop/restaurant

Mystic — The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission approved plans Tuesday night by Dan Meiser, owner of the Oyster Club and Engine Room, to open a new butcher shop and restaurant called Grass and Bone at 24 East Main St.

The commission approved Meiser’s request for a special use permit to expand the existing restaurant space to 52 seats with a permit to sell beer and wine. The building, which is across the street from the Mystic Post Office, has housed a Tim Hortons doughnut shop, Wide World of Bagels and, most recently, Cafe 511.

Meiser had said he not only wants to provide customers with locally sourced meats but generate more business for the local farms that raise the animals.

The approval is effective July 10 — the same day that a controversial regulation change that eliminates buffers between commercial uses and homes within the LS-5 zone, where the restaurant will be located, also takes affect. The commission also approved that measure Tuesday.

The commission also approved plans by nearby Angie's Pizza Restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue to add 24 outdoor seats. No increase in the restaurant's overall seating is proposed.
