    Local colleges: Mitchell softball wins first NEWMAC regular-season title

    New London — Mitchell College clinched the New England Collegiate Conference regular season softball championship for the first time in program history with a 6-0 and 16-0 sweep of Southern Vermont on Saturday.

    The Mariners (17-13, 16-2) will host the NECC double-elimination tournament May 1-3.

    Brittany Fiederlein pitched a two-hitter in the opener (her seventh shutout of the season) while Rivkah Berkman of New London and St. Bernard School pitched three shutout innings of relief in the second game to earn her first career win.

    Shannon O'Neil went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI in the two games for Mitchell while Dylan Riccardi and Berkman added four hits apiece.

    Baseball

    • Top-seeded MIT advanced to the championship series of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament by sweeping No. 5 Coast Guard 4-1 and 5-2 in a best-of-three semifinal series in Cambridge, Mass. Luke Sniakowski went the distance in the opener for the Bears (16-14), striking out five, while Tim Duncan doubled in the ninth and scored on a base hit by Blake Thompson for the Bears. Freshman Alex Murdoch drove in both runs for Coast Guard in the second game on a sacrifice fly and RBI single. MIT is 20-10.

    • Mitchell College ran its win streak to nine by sweeping a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Southern Vermont 15-2 and 13-6. Kenneth Olszewski went 6-for-9 with three RBI and five runs scored in the two games for the Mariners (24-3, 13-1) while starting pitchers Al Jordan Johnson of Fitch and Tyler Shamas each improved to 6-0 with wins.

    • Doug Domnarski pitched a seven-hitter in the opener, leading Avery Point to a doubleheader sweep of CCRI in NJCAA Region 21. Avery Point (24-9, 6-1) won the opener 11-3 and the second game 8-5. Domnarski, the former Stonington High standout, improved to 6-1. He struck out six with one walk. Bryant Morander (5-0) won the second game, allowing one earned run over five innings, and John Russell picked up his fourth save of the year. Garrett DeLotto led the offense with six hits and four RBI in the two games, Kyle Hart had five hits and Avery Santos hit a three-run homer in the opener.

    • Memphis evened its weekend American Athletic Conference series against UConn with a 4-3 victory over the Huskies in Storrs. Bobby Melley went 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI for the Huskies (28-16, 7-7) whle Joe DeRoche-Duffin also drove in a run. Memphis is 28-13, 8-6. The two teams conclude the series today at noon.

    Women's track

    • Connecticut College sophomore Bella Franz finished second in the 800-meter race (2:13.86) at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship meet at Williams. The Camels placed 10th with 28 points. In addition, sophomore Lauren Kennedy placed third in the javelin (122 feet, 2 inches) to qualify for the ECAC meet while classmate Aly Saperstein was fourth (121-6) and Ashley Curran placed sixth in the 5,000 (18:10.46).

    • Freshman Gabrielle Troise and senior Kyle Sutschek each placed in three events to lead Coast Guard to a fifth-place finish (45 points) in the NEWMAC Championship meet at MIT. Troise was second in the shot put (38-1.25), third in the discus (130-1.25) and fourth in the hammer (153-7.25) while Sutschek was seventh in the shot put (34-7.50) and hammer (135-6.25) and sixth in the discus (121-11.25). Also for the Bears, Alexia Troise was second in the discus (134-10.75) and Caitlin Parker was second in the javelin (119-11.75), Beth Golin was fourth in the 1,500 (4:44.92), Monet Masters was fifth in the pole vault (10-11.75) and Taylor Ballek was sixth (10-6), and the 4x400 relay team of Andrea Barrameda, Alexandra Cobb, Sarah Cummings and Ashlee Johnson was sixth (4:14.01).

    Men's track

    • Conn College placed 10th at the NESCAC Championship at Williams with 16 points, led by a third-place finish by its 4x800-meter relay team of Connor Trapp, Brad DeMarco, Jordan Comeau and Ben Bosworth, which ran a season-best 7:54.04. Patrick Dermody was fourth in the 5,000 (15:03.78) and qualified for the New England Division III and ECAC meets while Trapp finished sixth in the 800 (1:54.33).

    • Senior James Dawkins captured the 400-meter dash in 49.08 seconds to lead Coast Guard to a fourth-place finish at the NEWMAC Championship meet at MIT. Joey O'Connell added a second in the 10K (32:41.12) while the Bears had thirds from Ben Hannon in the 200 (22.51), Matt Navetta in the pole vault (14-1.25), Joel MacArthur in the javelin (164-5.5) and the 4x400 relay team of Raeford Penny, Kelcey Smith, Joe Kelly and Luke Rehfuss (3:25.75) and fourths from Jonathan Lash in the 5K (15:36.51), Stephen Horvath in the 3,200 (10:13.21) and the 4x100 relay team of Richard Lee, Penny, Hannon and Smith (43.32).

    Men's lacrosse

    • Coast Guard finished its first season as a Division III program with a 13-7 loss to regular-season champion Babson in the NEWMAC. Freshman Alec Groff scored two goals for the Bears, who finish 4-10, 2-5, while Pat Dreiss and Justin Huemme each had a goal and an assist.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Madeline Roulier had five goals and two assists to lead Daniel Webster to a 12-6 win over Mitchell. Freshman Amanda Rowan scored for goals for the Mariners, who finish 0-11, 0-7, while Tiana Fillmore and Samantha Ryan each scored one goal.

    Men's tennis

    • Seniors Josh Suneby and JC Cangelosi led Conn College to a 7-2 victory over Hamilton in the NESCAC. Suneby won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Camels (8-10), Cangelosi won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and the two teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles. Jonathan Kraiger and Ethan Hecker also won singles matches for Conn.

    • Becker ousted Mitchell 6-3 in the semifinals of the NECC tournament. Adam Diaz won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles for the Mariners (6-6), who picked up doubles wins from its top two teams of Diaz-Orson Sinclair and Graham Cavanaugh-Michael Berman.

    Women's tennis

    • Aleksandra Drljaca rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and teamed with Adrienne Sierverding to win at No. 1 doubles during Conn College's 7-2 loss to Hamilton in the NESCAC. Conn is 8-12, 1-6.
