    College roundup: Coast Guard's Behne named NEFC Defensive Player of the Week

    New London — Mark Behne, a free safety at the Coast Guard Academy, was named New England Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week after registering two fourth-quarter interceptions Saturday in the Bears' 21-14 win at Maine Maritime.

    Behne's second pick came in the end zone with 40 seconds remaining to preserve the victory for Coast Guard (3-2, 2-0), which overcame a 14-0 deficit in the second quarter. He also recorded a career-high 14 tackles.

    Behne is third on the team with 40 tackles and leads the team with 3.5 tackles for a loss, three interceptions and five pass breakups.

    Coast Guard is off this week and the Bears return to action Oct. 17 when they host MIT.

    Women's soccer

    • Eastern Connecticut State University’s Rachel Skelton of East Lyme was named Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after posting her third straight shutout within in the league, making five saves and extending her scoreless streak to 287 minutes, 49 seconds in a 1-0 victory at Keene State College. A senior, Skelton began the week by making six saves in a 1-0 home win over Conn College. In 10 starts, Skelton has a conference-leading 0.91 goals-against average and a .824 save percentage (third in the LEC) and six shutouts overall.

    Men's soccer

    • Mitchell College junior Andrew Nigro was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week. Nigro scored his first career hat trick as the Mariners remained unbeaten in NECC play with a 7-0 victory over Southern Vermont last week. He scored in the 8th minute, 26th minute and 74th minute to increase his goal total to four on the season. It is Nigro's first league honor of his career. A team captain and starting midfielder, he has played in every game this season and is tied for the team lead in scoring with 10 points (four goals, two assists).

    Sailing

    • Coast Guard won its home regatta, the Danmark Trophy, this weekend, an event which featured 14 ranked teams among the 18-team fleet. The Bears won the regatta, first contested in 1942, with 90 points, the first victory for Coast Guard in the event since 1973. Boston College finished second with 116 points and Harvard was third with 132. Ten races in each division were sailed in a northeasterly breeze that ranged from 10-25 knots during the two-day competition. Nikole Barnes and Andrew Britton sailed to an impressive 33-point victory in the B division, leading the team to the overall win. They finished outside of the top five only once and won four of the 10 races. In the A division, Avery Fanning and Robert Turley also put together a strong series, finishing fourth with 61 points.

    • Coast Guard's Dana Rohde finished second at the New England Women's Singlehanded Championship on Sunday to qualify for the national championship Nov. 7-8 at Old Dominion. Rohde finished with 24 points in the one-day event after sailing was abandoned Saturday due to high winds. Lindsay Baab of Brown won with six points. Conn College's Charlotte List was fourth with 24 points and will also attend the nationals.
