Nichols takes early lead over Coast Guard, hangs on for 24-14 victory

Dudley, Mass. — Nichols led 21-0 in the first 10 minutes, 4 seconds and picked up its first New England Conference victory since 2012 with a 24-14 win over the Coast Guard Academy football team in a game which featured 10 turnovers.

The victory for Nichols (3-4, 1-3) snapped a two-game winning streak for Coast Guard (3-4, 2-2), which scored 56 points just a week ago in a win over Curry.

Coast Guard's Darius Adams provided the highlight for the Bears, catching 10 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns to break the program record for touchdowns in a single season with 11. Adams, in his first season of football, tied the mark at nine with three touchdown receptions last week.

Adams, a junior, has 37 catches for 798 yards, an average of 21.6 yards per catch and 114 yards per game.

Nichols ran away with the game in the opening quarter, however. The Bison scored on their first drive, capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass from Chris Mullins to Mike Abbruzzese. On Coast Guard's next possession, Brett McEvoy intercepted Bears' quarterback Derek Victory and returned the pick 65 yards to the 3-yard line. Two plays later, Mullins scored on a 2-yard run for a 14-0 lead.

Nichols once again got excellent field position as Coast Guard mishandled the snap on a punt in the pouring rain, with the Bison taking over on the 1-yard line. On fourth down, Mullins threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Brenden Massey with 4:56 still remaining in the first quarter.

A freshman, Mullins was 22 of 49 for 238 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Matt O'Donnell had two interceptions for Coast Guard and Jake Behne and Patrick Crowley had one each.

The Bears got on the scoreboard following a Nichols fumble, as Adams caught a 28-yard touchdown from Victory on fourth-and-16 to pull within 21-7 with 12:57 remaining in the first half. The Bears forced a punt, but then fumbled at the Nichols 22 their next time down the field and the Bears trailed by two touchdowns at the half.

Nichols tacked on a 21-yard field goal by Grant Klimek, set up by his own 63-yard run, in the third quarter for a 24-7 lead. Crowley's interception set up Coast Guard's final touchdown, an 18-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Ethan Goldcamp to Adams with 3:17 left in the third.

Victory was 19-for-41 for 270 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, while Goldcamp finished 6-for-13 fir 72 yards and a touchdown in relief. In addition to Adams' big day receiving, tight end Cody Bain caught six passes for 126 yards. The Bears finished with just 27 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Defensive back Ryan Robertson led the Coast Guard defense with 13 tackles.

The Bears play next Saturday at MIT.
