XL Center, Rentscher Field to host future NCAA events

Connecticut will have a major college tournament presence in the coming years after the NCAA announced future sites in various sports on Tuesday.

The NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament will return to the XL Center in Hartford, which will host first- and second-round games in 2019, while Rentschler Field in East Hartford will host the NCAA Division I, II and III men's lacrosse championship on Memorial Day weekend in 2021 and 2022 after hosting Division I men's quarterfinals in 2019.

In addition, Bridgeport's Webster Bank Arena will host a Division I men's hockey regional in 2018, Quinnipiac University in Hamden will host the NCAA Women's Frozen Four in 2019 and Yale University in New Haven will host the 2022 NCAA Division I men's golf regional tournament at The Course at Yale.

"This is an exciting time for Hartford and the entire region," said XL Center general manager Chris Lawrence, whose group will also oversee the lacrosse events at Rentschler Field. "We look forward to working with UConn, the NCAA and everyone else involved."

The XL Center last hosted NCAA men's tournament games 1998 and previously hosted in 1983, 1985, 1988 and 1990. The UConn men's team will not be eligible to play its games in Hartford if they are selected to the 2019 field. Teams are not allowed to play at sites where their institution is serving as a host.
