Analysis: Last week Coast Guard fell 21-7 to MIT, marking the debut of freshman Joe Armentrout as the Bears' starting quarterback. Armentrout was 17 of 37 for 291 yards and a touchdown — thrown to former quarterback Tafari Wall, who moved to receiver while still serving as backup QB. Damaso Jaime had three catches for a game-high 107 yards. "It's not about me," Wall said this week about the grace with which he handled the switch. "It's really not about me. It's about helping the guys out whenever I can. Being a leader doesn't mean you have to play quarterback; it's just supporting the guys whenever you can and just trying to make plays whenever your name is called." ... Coast Guard had 364 yards offense against MIT, but turned the ball over three times and had a pair of field goals blocked, in addition to going 1-for-5 in the red zone. ... WPI snapped a six-game losing streak last week with a 28-2 win at Norwich. The Engineers are averaging 303.4 yards per game on offense (183 passing, 120.4 rushing) and allowing 392.3 yards per game (209.5 rushing, 182.8 passing). WPI is similiar to MIT in its offensive makeup, Coast Guard coach C.C. Grant said. "Especially from a run standpoint," Grant said. "So the prep week this week is fairly similar. For the kids, there's some memory of how to defend certain plays and certain formations, which should help us out." Said Coast Guard junior wide receiver Jacob Wagner: "We were shooting ourselves in the foot. I think we're making the right changes to get those things sorted out. We're getting a lot of our injured people, they're coming back." ... Coast Guard wide receivers James Duren and Cody Fidler should be back in the mix this week after missing time due to injuries. Defensive lineman Andrew Rizzo (ankle) is out and will be replaced by sophomore Jonathan Rahmes. ... The teams last met in 2019 with WPI hanging a 54-7 victory on the Bears, running up 473 yards of offense. ... Locals on the WPI roster include East Lyme graduate Blake Bragaw, who starts for the Engineers at outside linebacker, and Norwich Free Academy grad Brendan Green, the Engineers' starting center. Bragaw, a senior, is third on the team with 38 tackles, three tackles for a loss, and a forced fumble.
