Chicago — The Connecticut Sun head into the Olympic break needing to make up ground in the WNBA playoff race.

Connecticut continued to give itself a chance to be in the conversation Friday night, however. Rookie Jonquel Jones had 20 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals as the Sun beat the Chicago Sky, 94-89, at AllState Arena.

It was the fifth win in eight games for Connecticut (8-16).

“With the youngest team in the league, we really tried to hit the reset button at the seventeenth game, the first half of the season," Miller said. "Right now we’re really excited with the way we’ve played."

Alyssa Thomas had 16 points, five rebounds and two steals for Connecticut and Alex Bentley scored 20.

The Sun won with Chiney Ogwumike playing just 15 minutes due to foul trouble. She scored 10.

Jones more than compenstated for Ogwumike's absence with her first career double-double. She scored five during a decisive 17-5 run late in the fourth quarter.

“She was big down the stretch,” Miller said. “Big deflections, big steals and she got a big blocked shot when we needed it.”

Jones said, “I have teammates that really believe in what I can do, and they let me know that every time we step on the court. There are certain things that we emphasize when we watch film with our coaching staff, just being big and putting up the shots. I think I did a good job of doing that, and the flow of the game just allowed me to be successful.”

Reigning WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne had 20 points and four rebounds for the Sky (11-13) and Tamera Young added 14 points and six rebounds.

Connecticut has the league's second-worst record. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs regardless of conference.

The Washington Mystics and Seattle Storm are both tied for the eighth seed with identical 9-15 records. Both clinched the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Sun, thus giving both a two-game lead over them.

Phoenix (10-14) is seventh and has a three-game lead over the Connecticut based on head-to-head play.

The Sun trailed Chicago with four minutes, 50 seconds left in the game when Jones converted a three-point play. She added two free throws 41 seconds later to push Connecticut ahead, 78-74.

"We’re really excited about our future," Miller said. "(Jones) shows flashes of why we were willing to give up a first-round draft pick for her.”

Jones blocked a shot by Delle Donne, leading to a layup by rookie Morgan Tuck to push the Sun ahead, 82-76, with over three minutes left. They never trailed again.
