Mitchell College, Denison Pequotsepos celebrate Seuss

Think you've read all the new Dr. Seuss books you could read?

    Not so, my friend.

A Seuss manuscript titled "What Pet Should I Get" was recently discovered, and Random House Children's Books will publish it in July. It's one of the works found by the widow and secretary of Theodor Geisel, who died in 1991.

And what better way to gear up for that publication than to dive into the 14th annual Cat in the Hat Ball Saturday at Mitchell College.

It's got the perfect author coming to the festivities: Tish Rabe, whose many books include the best-selling "The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library" series. That library consists of rhyming science books for early readers. Rabe, who has a home in Mystic, will read and sign copies Saturday.

The Cat in the Hat Ball, hosted by Mitchell College's Education Department, offers all sorts of activities for families, including games, crafts, music (from folk musician Ted Phillips, among others) and storytelling.

It's all in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, so there will be cake, along with generous helpings of Oobleck (if you have to ask, you're not a real Seuss fan) and pizza. Feel free to wear a Cat-ish hat or any entertaining head topper.

On Saturday, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday, too. Its program is called "Seuss on the Loose" and includes a reading of "The Lorax" and making, yes, Oobleck.
