Wildflowers meets Christmas classics: Judy Collins comes to the Kate

Though you have probably heard many things about Judy Collins, you might not have heard this: she kickstarted her music career while living in Storrs, Connecticut. She was there in the early '60s with her first husband, Peter Taylor, while he was studying at the University of Connecticut, and by matter of proximity, Collins frequently drove to Greenwich Village to perform. It was on those trips that she would meet musicians such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, and the rest we'll say is history.

But Collins hasn't gotten lost in history quite yet, she is still touring at the age of 78. In fact, Collins hasn't seemed to slow down much throughout her 50-plus year singing career, producing dozens of studio, live and compilation albums and experimenting with different music styles. Her next stop will be at the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center on Friday and Saturday for three performances — a personal showcase of holiday hits for the Christmas season.

An update on what she's been up to: Most recently, she paired up with Crosby, Stills & Nash's Stephen Stills, a former lover and longtime friend, to create their album "Everybody Knows," which was released in September. Their brief romantic relationship in the 1960s, it should be noted, informed the inspiration that Stills needed to write "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" in 1968 — one of rock's greatest breakup songs.

Judy Collins: An Evening of Holiday and Hits, 8 p.m. Friday, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $75-$78; 1-877-503-1286.
