Five more schools secure playoff bids

The threat of stormy weather today helped clear up the CIAC playoff picture on Tuesday.

Five more teams unofficially qualified as most of the games scheduled for today were moved up to Tuesday. There are still 10 more berths to be claimed.

Class S filled in quickly as Northwest Catholic, Canton, Windham and North Branford all won their respective games and clinched spots.

Those four join defending champion Ansonia and Valley Regional/Old Lyme (11-0), the latter which will be the top seed in the Class S-Large Division.

Hall secured a spot in Class LL-Small.

There are four berths left in Class LL and two each in Class L, M and S.

New London (7-2) will earn a Class M-Large berth if it wins at home on Thanksgiving against Norwich Free Academy in the 153rd game in the nation's oldest rivalry.

NFA (6-2) will have a chance to earn a spot in Class LL-Large with a win.

Ledyard (10-0) has already qualified for Class M-Small and will play host to either Ellington/Somers or Wolcott. Defending champion St. Joseph rounds out that field.

The playoff field likely won't be filled until Saturday as some Thanksgiving Day games have already been moved to that date.

The CIAC's football committee will approve the playoff rankings on Sunday.

The semifinals will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at the higher seed. Teams with lights were given permission on Wednesday to hold night games if they choose instead of playing in the afternoon.

The CIAC also announced the sites and times for its finals. Willowbrook Park in New Britain will play host to four state finals, the first on Friday night, Dec. 12. It will host a tripleheader the following day at 10 a.m., 2 and 6 p.m.

Arute Field at Central Connecticut State University and West Haven's Strong Stadium will both play host to two finals that Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
