    High school roundup: Falcons will go for swimming’s sweep

    Groton - Eastern Connecticut Conference regular-season champion Fitch/Stonington will have the top seed in six out of nine individual events at the league's swimming and diving championship.

    The diving portion of the event is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. today at East Lyme High School, while the swimming events will take place beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at UConn Avery Point.

    East Lyme's Mitchell Ryan will defend his diving championship, having captured the title last season with a school record 425.55 points.

    East Lyme is the reigning champion at the ECC meet, winning its 11th title in the last 12 years in 2014. Fitch/Stonington went 10-0 in the league this season, however, snapping East Lyme's 27-meet winning streak within in the conference, and looks to add the championship meet to its list of accomplishments.

    Fitch/Stonington's Sam Kokomoor (200-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Dakota Williams (200 individual medley, 100 freestyle) are the top seeds in two events, while teammate Aaron Lewis is the favorite in the 500 freestyle and John Moody in the 100 backstroke. Williams was the ECC Swimmer of the Meet last season.

    East Lyme's Ethan Opsahl is the No. 1 seed in the 100 breaststroke.

    Boys' basketball

    • Old Lyme will try to beat top-seeded Valley Regional for the first time in four years when the two play tonight for the Shoreline Conference championship at Wilbur Cross at 7. The second-seeded Wildcats have lost six consecutive games to Valley Regional, including a 56-54 loss on Jan. 29. Old Lyme (18-4) last beat Valley 63-61 in the Shoreline final on March 4, 2011.

    Girls' basketball

    • Both CIAC Class S girls' basketball second-round tournament games involving local schools were postponed until today. Eighth-seeded Old Lyme will play host to No. 24 Wheeler at 4:30 p.m. while No. 20 St. Bernard visits No. 4 Bolton at 7.

    Wrestling

    • State Open champion Khaleed Exum-Strong of Norwich Free Academy leads a group of six local wrestlers into this weekend's New England tournament at North Andover, Mass. Exum-Strong, the 220-pound champion, received a first-round bye and will meet the winner of a first-round match between Zachariah O'Connor of Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) and Jon Ferri of Windham (N.H.).

    Ledyard's Daric Johnson, the State Open runner-up at 220, also received a bye into the second round where he will face Nick Rose of Arlington (Mass.). Also competing will be NFA's Matt Foster (113), who will wrestle Brett Rezendes of Bridgewater-Raynham (Mass.) in the second round; New London's Alejandro Paulino (126), who will wrestle Tyler Craig of Skowhegan (Maine) in the first round; Montville's Tommy Wynosky (132), who will wrestle Matt Pacheco of Somerset (Mass.) in the first round; and Waterford's Sam Lindblom (138), who will wrestle Chris Behen of Danvers (Mass.) in the first round.

    Wrestling begins at 5:15 today with the first two rounds and the first round of consolation matches and concludes Saturday with the championship quarterfinals at 9 a.m., championship semifinals at 1 p.m. and the championship finals at 5:15.

    Gymnastics

    • NFA's Taylor Churchill will compete for the all-around title at Saturday's State Open championship meet in New Milford beginning at 10 a.m. Churchill, a sophomore, is seeded fourth with an average of 36.55 points. She is also seeded No. 3 in the vault (9.3125), fifth on the uneven bars (9.2375), fourth on the balance beam (9.1875) and 11th in the floor exercise (9.0375).

    In addition, Montville junior Morgan Staehle will compete in the vault (8.5875 average), uneven bars (8.5125) and floor exercise (8.6375), and Waterford sophomore Elisabeth Heikkinen will compete on the balance beam (8.475).
