    CLASS S BOYS

    Sacred Heart 71, Valley Regional 46

    Malik Petteway had 22 points and 18 rebounds as the top-ranked Hearts rolled to their second straight Class S title before 9,059 at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday.

    Mustapha Herron had 32 points and eight rebounds for the Hearts (28-0), who will go wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the New Haven Register Top 10 poll.

    Chris Jean-Pierre had 17 points and six rebounds for the sixth-seeded Warriors (22-6). Nash Eppard added 12 points and nine rebounds.

    The Hearts beat Valley in the Class S final, 65-56.

    Sacred Heart raced to an 18-4 lead late in the first period and never led by less than double digits. Herron's jumper gave his team their largest lead of the game, 67-43, with 2 minutes, 17 seconds remaining.

    The attendance for the weekend's three sessions was a record-setting 20,897.

    CLASS L BOYS

    Bunnell 72, Naugatuck 61

    Aaron Samuel had 21 points, six rebounds and five assists as the fifth-seeded Bulldogs won their first state title.

    Donte' Peeler had 17 points and eight rebounds for Bunnell (24-4) and Ryan Pittman added 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

    Jarron Chapman had 29 points and seven rebounds for the No. 7 Greyhounds (22-5).

    CLASS L GIRLS

    Hartford Capital 87, NW Catholic 59

    Kiah Gillespie, a Maryland-bound senior, had a game-high 42 points and 22 rebounds with three assists and three blocks as the Trailblazers blitzed their way to a third straight state title.

    Desiree Elmore had 30 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists, five blocks and five steals for fourth-seeded Prep (25-1), the top-ranked team in the New Haven Register poll.

    Haley Connors and Erin Feeney both scored 12 for the No. 11 Indians (19-7).

    Prep scored the first 11 points as it took the Indians almost four minutes to score. The Trailblazers led by as much as 35 (70-35) with 40 seconds let in the third quarter.
