    H.S. tennis roundup: St. Bernard's Zuczek brothers reach ECC singles final again

    Waterford — The Zuczek brothers of St. Bernard School are back on center stage again.

    A year after Alex Zuczek won the 2014 Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' singles championship when older brother Nick was forced to retire down 5-4 in the first set due to an elbow injury, both players won two matches on Wednesday to advance to today's 3 p.m. final at Waterford High School.

    Alex, a sophomore and the No. 1 seed, defeated No. 8 Jacob Kowalski of Fitch (6-0, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Willie Dong of Waterford (6-1, 6-2) in the semis.  Nick, a senior and the third seed, cruised past No. 6 Avery Oefinger of Stonington (6-0, 6-3) and No. 7 Parker Skaats of Lyman Memorial (6-1, 6-0).

    The doubles final will also be an all-teammate affair after fourth-seeded Mukesh Kurumbail and Sujay Alavala of East Lyme upset No. 1 Matthew Hausman and Samson Herbert of Waterford 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the semifinals to earn a spot opposite fellow Vikings Nipun Hewage and Eric Wu. Hewage and Wu, the No. 2 seed, beat No. 7 Dylan Vitale and Mike Gianakos of Waterford 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

    Shoreline boys

    • Old Lyme junior Brendan White, the defending Shoreline Conference boys' singles champion, won twice to reach the semifinals of the league tournament which will begin at 1 p.m. today at Old Lyme High School with the championship match to follow.

    Also for Old Lyme, Ethan Fenton reached the semifinals of the 3-4-5 singles tournament and the doubles teams of Austin Pilgrim-Jason Feng and Alex Clippinger-Adam Czarnecki reached the semis. Pilgrim was the Shoreline runner-up last year along with Fenton.

    Old Lyme finished 19-1 this season, sharing the Shoreline title with Old Saybrook.

    ECC girls

    • Top-seeded Hannah Fabianski of host Stonington won a pair of matches to advance to the ECC tournament quarterfinals. She will play No. 9 Olivia Lyon of Ledyard at 3 p.m. today with the semifinals to follow. Other quarterfinal matchups include No. 2 Michaela Abate of St. Bernard vs. No. 10 Riana Lincoln of Woodstock Academy, No. 3 Lauren Rahr of Waterford vs. No. 6 Emily Gardiner of Stonington and No. 4 Angela Martin of Woodstock vs. No. 5 Diana Francis of Fitch.

    In doubles, three of the top four seeds advanced to today's semifinals, which will also start at 3. The top-seeded team of Lyman Memorial's Maggie Tarbox-Anna Puleo will face No. 5 Gina Feliciano-Morgan Parrilla of Stonington, while No. 2 Alaina Moger-Sophie Wang of Waterford will face No. 3 Mallory McArdle-Claire Morehouse of Stonington.
