H.S. tennis: Old Lyme's White repeats as Shoreline singles champ

Old Lyme — The Old Lyme High School boys’ tennis junior class turned Thursday’s Shoreline Conference championships into their own showcase.

Top-seeded Brendan White downed Sabahudin Cecunjanin of Old Saybrook 6-0, 6-3 to win his second straight Division 1-2 bracket championship.

Ethan Fenton beat Cromwell’s Jared Grant 6-0, 6-4 in the Division 3-4-5 bracket while Austin Pilgrim and Jason Feng beat teammates Alex Clippinger and Adam Czarnecki 6-1, 6-2 to win the doubles title.

“This is the first time in my 15 years that one team has won all three of the brackets,” Old Lyme coach John Pfeiffer said. “I was really pleased and kind of surprised. … I can’t overemphasize how unique this is, and we shared the Shoreline Conference title with Old Saybrook.”

White (23-0) beat Cecunjanin twice during the regular season. The first match went two sets, and the second went three sets.

“I had to step up by game this year and try to be a better player,” White said. “I’d say my overall fitness is better and definitely my serve has improved along with my consistency.

“Defending my Shoreline title was one of the most important things for me to do, plus going undefeated was another goal. Now I want to go farther in the states (Class S). I was taken out by the No. 2 season early last year (third round).”

Pfeiffer said, “I was really concerned. When you play a good player and beat him both times, the third time is usually when they get your number. To win three in a row is really difficult.”

    ECC girls' tournament

Top-seeded Hannah Fabianski of Stonington and No. 2 Michaela Abate of St. Bernard recorded a pair of straight victories to advance to the singles finals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament at Stonington.

Fabianski defeated No. 9 Olivia Lyon of Ledyard 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and No. 5 Angela Martin of Woodstock Academy 6-4, 6-2 in the semis. Abate, meanwhile, ousted No. 6 Emily Gardiner of Stonington 6-1, 6-1 in the quarters and No. 3 Lauren Rahr of Waterford 6-1, 7-5 in the semis.

Today's final, originally scheduled to start at 3 p.m., has been pushed back until 2 because Stonington has its Senior Prom later in the evening. That includes the doubles match which will feature No. 2 Alaina Moger and Sophie Wang of Waterford against No. 5 Gina Feliciano and Morgan Parilla of Stonington.

Felciano and Parilla upset the top-seeded team of Lyman Memorial's Maggie Tarbox and Anna Puleo 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinals while Moger and Wang outlasted No. 3 Mallory McArdle and Claire Morehouse of Stonington 6-2, 7-6 (7).
