    H.S. roundup: East Lyme's Moffett wins boys' seeded race at Wickham

    Manchester — East Lyme senior Vann Moffett captured the boys' seeded race at the annual Wickham Park Invitational on Saturday.

    Moffett finished the 5k course in 16 minutes, 19 seconds, a time that would have placed him third overall in the championship race that followed. He defeated Guilford's Ben Siciliano by three seconds and heled the Vikings place 20th overall as a team with 445 points.

    Fitch's Tom Readett placed 41st in 17:47.

    Norwich Free Academy had an impressive showing in the championship race, placing three runners in the top 15 en route to a third-place finish (115 points) behind champion Staples (65) and runnerup East Greenwich, R.I. (94).

    Senior Connor Gralton led the Wildcats in third place (16:26) behind Cheshire sophomore Brendan Murray (15:56) and North Kingstown, R.I. freshman Sam Toolin (16:14), while Tyler Sholes finished 14th for NFA (16:59), Brandon Mehlinger 15th (17:00), Lucas Shea 38th (17:35) and Vincent Huang 44th (17:41).

    Ledyard finished 10th overall with 248 points behind Christian Kuss, who placed 30th overall in 17:36. Aaron Norica (41st, 17:36) and Jacob Money (47th, 17:47) also cracked the top 50 for the Colonels.

    In the girls' championship race, Tolland's Katherine Deloreto was the individual winner in 18:45 over 5K and led her team to the team title with 54 points. And in the seeded race, Fitch's Nell Chidley finished 27th (21:10) and Habeeba Kamel 29th (21:11) as the Falcons placed 17th with 437 points.

    NFA was the top local finisher in the seeded race in 11th (338) led by Sarah Burns (60th, 22:09).

    In another meet:

    • The Williams School boys placed third and the girls ninth at the Gordon Glover Invitational at Suffield Academy. Will Jarrett was the top boys' finisher in sixth place (18:11) as the Blues finished with 93 points, and he was followed by Colin Madaus (16th, 20:08), Hartmut Doerwaldt (21st, 20:59), Colin Kronholm (24th place, 21:48) and Colin Ladd (26th, 22:37).

    The girls' finished with 221 points and were led by Mary Madaus (13th, 22:02), Hattie Grant (45th, 25:19), Grace Burleson (48th, 25:47), Grace Cassineri (53rd, 26:18) and Sarah Billis (62nd, 27:24).

    Boys' soccer

    • Adam Crawford scored an unassisted goal just 3:31 into the match and Ledyard went on to win its second game in as many days with a 2-0 victory over Wheeler. Jack Woodruff, assisted by A.J. Genova, added a goal in the 17th minute for the Colonels (2-8) and goalie Isiah McNair made two saves, while keeper Alex Haines made seven saves for Wheeler (1-10).

    Girls' soccer

    • Claire Hurley scored three goals in the first half and Ciana Chiappone scored her first varsity goal in the second to lead Waterford to a 4-0 victory over Norwich Free Academy. Chiappone also had an assist for the Lancers (9-1-1), as did Mary Grace Wyatt, Megan Sturm and Riva Blinderman, while goalie Jordan Kovacs earned the shutout by making three saves. Goalie Kayla Tosses stopped six shots for NFA (2-8).

    • Mya Johnson had one goal and one assist to highlight Old Lyme's 5-0 nonleague win over St. Bernard. Mary Bolles, Jenna Peduzzi, Keelin Hurtt and Brittney DeRoehn also scored goals for the Wildcats while Caleigh O'Neil added an assist. Marissa Fratoni made 10 saves in goal for the Saints (5-4-1).

    • Emily Kowalski scored a pair of goals and Ledyard scored all of its goals in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over Wheeler. Alyssa Samson added a goal and an assist for the Colonels (7-2), who did not allow a shot on goal, while Olivia Holubecki assisted on Kowalski's second goal in the 34th minute. Wheeler is 2-7.

    Volleyball

    • East Hampton defeated Old Lyme 25-18, 25-14 and 25-13 in the Shoreline Conference. Sophia Romeo had four kills and nine digs for the Wildcats (3-10, 2-10) while Marissa Smith added nine assists.

    Field hockey

    • Stonington played to a 1-1 tie with Branford in a nonleague game. Branford scored with 18 minutes left in the first half and Stonington's Trinity Lennon tied it with 4:16 left in the first half, deflecting a shot by Margit Burgess into the goal. Cameron Dreher made 13 saves for Stonington (7-0-3), which was outshot 14-4.
