Plainfield High football team suspended, will forfeit Friday's game to Waterford

The Waterford High School football team has its first win of the season without any of the benefits.

The Lancers were awarded a forfeit victory for this Friday's game against Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division opponent Plainfield after Plainfield officials suspended the school's football team Tuesday for one game. Several players shared sexually explicit photos and videos during a group chat, parents and school officials told nbcconnecticut.com.

“The district decided that the team needed to accept responsibility as a team and forfeit the game,” Plainfield school superintendent Dr. Kenneth Di Pietro told nbcconnecticut.com. “The public should not assume that all student-athletes are responsible.”

Waterford lost its first four games of the season.

“We, as a school, feel for them and hopefully everything works out,” Waterford athletic director Dave Sousa said. “We wanted to win for sure, but we wanted to go out and play it. This is unfortunate.”

Complicating matters for the Lancers is they’ll go 20 days without a game. They last played on Oct. 10 (a 21-13 loss to Stonington) and had a bye last weekend. They’re scheduled to  host Fitch on Oct. 30.

“In four weeks, we’ll only be playing one week,” Sousa said. “This is definitely not helping.”
