    H.S. tennis roundup: Fitch's Cote advances to ECC quarters

    Stonington — Samantha Cote of Fitch, the No. 22 seed, picked up a pair of victories at the Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' tennis tournament on Wednesday, advancing to the quarterfinals.

    Cote, a freshman, beat No. 11 Lilly Tartsinis 8-3 in the first round and beat No. 6 Abby Lassiter of Killingly 8-3. The top five seeds — No. 1 Gabby Dellacono of Stonington, No. 2 Olivia Lyon of Ledyard, No. 3 Michaela Abate of St. Bernard, No. 4 Jolin Cheng of Woodstock and No. 5 Alaina Moger of Waterford — also won both their matches. The other quarterfinalists are No. 7 Charlotte Johnstone of Stonington and No 9 Wendy Bessette of St. Bernard.

    In Thursday's quarterfinals, Dellacono plays Bessette, Moger plays Cheng, Abate plays Cote and Johnstone plays Lyon. Action begins at the Stonington High courts Thursday at 3 p.m.

    The top three doubles teams won twice each, advancing to Thursday's semifinals. No. 1 Claire Morehouse and Phoebe Townsend of Stonington, No. 3 Hannah Middleton-Krancberg and Brielle Fratoni-Jaskiewicz of Stonington and No. 4 Catherine Yao and Stacey Tasoulas of Waterford all won along with No. 10 Cassie Onorato and Holly Foster of Stonington.

    Morehouse and Townsend will play Yao and Tasoulas in the semis and the other two Stonington teams will face off.

    Boys

    The top eight seeds advanced to the ECC boys' tennis tournament, setting up Thursday's quarterfinals. No. 1 Alex Zuczek of St. Bernard plays No. 8 Steven Gervase of Lyman Memorial, No. 5 Jacob Stiger of Stonington plays No. 4 Mike Gianakos of Waterford, No. 3 Eric Wu of East Lyme plays No. 6 Bahaa Hoda of New London and No. 7 Tyler Huhtanen of Woodstock plays No. 2 Camiren Carter of Waterford.

    In doubles, No. 4 Adam Pinch and David Perez have advanced to the semifinals along with No. 3 Sean Bessette and Ryan Sealy of Stonington. Today's other quarterfinals have No. 1 Mukesh Kurumbail and Davon Chen of East Lyme playing No. 8 Conrad French and Charlie Lyden of East Lyme and No. 7 Ethan Hellwig and Jeff Mathieu of Woodstock facing No. 2 Evan Burdsall and Dylan Vitale of Waterford.

    Action begins Thursday at at East Lyme at 3 p.m.
