Worcester, Mass. — East Lyme High School coach Scott Mahon gave his girls' varsity eight a choice at Sunday's New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships on Lake Quinsigamond.

"I gave them two options, to go to grand (final) or go to petit (final). I didn't give them the third option of one-and-done," Mahon said with a laugh.

East Lyme, seeded seventh in the event, was second in its heat to reach the prestigious grand final. The Vikings then finished sixth overall in New England, coming off a championship at the Connecticut Public School championship last weekend.

East Lyme will next row at the nationals in Philadelphia in June.

"It was another feather in the cap," Mahon said of reaching the New England grand final. "They qualified for nationals last week and they solidified it with making grands today.

"They started working real hard way back in December, January, people rowing in the fall. ... They really bonded well. They knew every race they could improve and they could build and they were confident they could do just that. They never thought, 'We can't do it, coach.'"

Racing for the Vikings were coxswain Bianca Barroga, stroke Julia Lefurge, Katie Long, Rasa Kirvelevicius, Alexa Stewart, Gretchen Stelter, Allie Christensen, Lauren Alexandrescu and Kristina Fenton in the bow.
