    H.S. baseball: Fitch wins Class L opener 4-3 in 11 innings

    Groton — Ryan Tuohy's bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning gave 15th-seeded Fitch a 4-3 win over No. 18 Bethel in the first round of the CIAC Class L baseball tournament on Tuesday.

    The Falcons (12-9) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with a hit batter, two walks and a wild pitch. They also overcame a 3-2 deficit in the 11th, thanks to Colton St. Louis' RBI single. St. Louis was the winning pitcher.

    Up next is another home game in the second round at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against No. 31 North Haven, the reigning Class L champion. North Haven upset No. 2 Berlin 5-3.

    In other first-round games:

    • Alex Petchark doubled, homered and scored four times as No. 1 Waterford beat No. 32 Bullard-Havens 14-0 in Class M. Mike Burrows (7-1) allowed one hit over four innings for the win, striking out eight. Burrows also homered and scored three runs and Collin Bakken was 2-for-2 with four RBI for the Lancers (22-2), who host No. 17 Goodwin Tech in the second round on Wednesday.

    • No. 28 Norwich Free Academy, fresh off its championship in the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament, won its Class LL opener with a 2-1 victory over No. 5 New Britain. The Wildcats (14-11) will visit No. 21 Wilton, a 2-0 winner over No. 12 Cheshire, in Wednesday's second round Andy Grant went the distance for NFA, scattering four hits without walking a batter. Brody Adams drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the fifth while Caleb Bierman had two hits and Grant and Robert Thorburn each had a double.

    • No. 10 New London fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and never led, losing to No. 23 Avon, 7-2, in Class L. Gabriel Cortorreal had an RBI double and Freddy Pacheco added an RBI single for the Whalers, who finish 14-9.

    • No. 10 Montville scored in every inning but the first on the way to an 11-3 win over No. 23 Abbott Tech in Class M. TT Bowens belted two home runs and drove in five runs while Eric Ross had two doubles and three RBI and Tommy McDonald tripled and had two RBI for the Indians (16-7), who host No. 26 Weston in the second round on Wednesday.

    • No. 4 East Lyme jumped out to a five-run lead and held on for a 5-3 win over No. 29 Guilford in Class L. Matt Spang had a home run, double and an RBI while Matt Malcom had a single, double and two RBI and Ryan Kane pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Vikings (17-5), who host No. 20 Platt on Wednesday.

    • Brett Hartmann's bases-clearing triple keyed a six-run third inning that lifted No. 24 Old Lyme to a 7-3 victory over No. 9 Sacred Heart of Waterbury in Class S. The Wildcats (11-11) will play their second-round game on Wednesday at home against No. 25 Terryville, a 7-5 winner over No. 8 East Hampton. Cameron Dean-Frazier added two hits, including an RBI triple, for Old Lyme to back the six-hit pitching of Callum Sawden.

    • Cam Winiarz struck out the first 10 batters and finished with 14 overall, leading No. 26 St. Bernard past No. 7 Shepaug Valley, 1-0, in Class S. Winiarz allowed just two hits in six innings and walked one. Brian Guetens pitched the final inning, striking out two, while Scott Bailey's RBI single drove in Connor Svab, who walked and stole second, in the fourth inning for the Saints (10-12), who visit No. 23 Cromwell in Wednesday's second round.

    • No. 30 Ledyard managed just five hits in a 6-3 loss to No. 3 Tolland in Class M. Cade Walters and Ty Ebdon each had a single and an RBI for the Colonels (12-13). 

    • No. 27 Stonington beat No. 6 Valley Regional, 5-3, in Class M. Adam Gibbs was the winning pitcher while Ben Dellacono had a two-run single, John Moody had a two-run triple and Kyle Whipple added an RBI double for the Bears (11-11), who visit No. 22 Rockville in Wednesday's second round.
