ECC soccer tournaments: Stonington boys advance on penalty kicks
Groton — Stonington High School advanced to the quarterfinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' soccer tournament, beating No. 8 Fitch 4-1 on penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless tie on Wednesday.
Cam Whalen, Jack Cullen, Jamison Magowan and Harrison Hoops made penalty kicks and Joey Rosa made five saves for No. 9 Stonington (10-5-2), which plays at No. 1 Waterford at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Weston Jacey made 15 saves for Fitch (8-9) and teammate Jon Cobena made a penalty kick.
In other games:
• No. 10 Montville was eliminated, losing to No. 6 Woodstock 3-0. Nik Strickland made five saves for Montville (8-8-1).
• No. 7 East Lyme shut out No. 10 St. Bernard 5-0. Alec Kosinski scored twice off assists from Zach Vandale while Matt Malcom also scored twice for the Vikings (8-9). Anthony Abromov and Will Luzi added assists and Pat Dowd also scored. East Lyme visits Lyman Memorial on Friday.
• Samuel Dumond and Victor Castro gave No. 5 Norwich Free Academy a two-goal lead at halftime and the Wildcats hung on to a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Ledyard. NFA will play No. 4 Bacon Academy on Friday. Troy Maurer made five saves for NFA (8-7). Jack Woodruff scored for Ledyard (7-10).
Girls
• Natalie Dionne had two goals and two assists to lift Norwich Free Academy past 11th-seeded Griswold 4-0 in an ECC tournament first-round game. Dionne's unassisted goal handed the No. 6 Wildcats a 1-0 lead at the break and she then set up Juliette Hogan's two goals in the second half. Goalie Kayla Tosses made two saves to post the shutout for NFA (8-7-1), which plays at Woodstock on Friday.
• Kate Hall and Alex Jefson scored about 10 minutes apart in the first half to power No. 7 Stonington past No. 11 Bacon Academy 2-0. Noelle Thomas and Lainnie Connor each added an assist and goalie Hannah Lamb had 21 saves for the Bears (8-6-3).
Stonington plays at East Lyme on Friday night. The Vikings won the regular-season meeting 4-0.
"We're playing well," Stonington coach Dave Walsh said. "Last year, (East Lyme) beat us 7-0 at home during the regular season and we beat them 3-0 in the ECC tournament, so you never know."
• Julia Florek and Edith Anger each scored their first career goals in No. 8 Waterford's 5-0 win over No. 9 Lyman Memorial. Julia Gigliotti had two goals and an assist while Kayla Jean Pierre also scored for the Lancers (8-6-3), who visit top-seeded Plainfield at 3 p.m. Friday.
