H.S. football / Thanksgiving preview capsules

New London receiver Star Stokes (5) and quarterback Melquann Gomez (1) celebrate their touchdown connection during last Friday's 34-6 win over Waterford. The Whalers will to complete a perfect regular season when they host rival Norwich Free Academy on Thanksgiving Day in the 155th meeting of the nation's oldest high school football rivalry. (Sean D. Wednesday's Game

    Windham at Montville, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Windham (7-2); Montville (2-7)

Last week: Windham defeated Woodstock 46-0; Montville was idle

Outlook: It is unlikely that Windham will make the Class S playoffs, even with a win here. The Whips would finish 8-2, but their two close losses — to Waterford and Killingly in the closing minutes — will likely keep them out. They certainly need to win, hope for all their bonus points and an upset or two across the state.

    Thursday's Games

NFA at New London, 10 a.m.

    Records: NFA (7-2, 3-0 ECC Div. 1); New London (9-0, 3-0)

Last week: NFA was idle; New London defeated Waterford 34-6

Outlook: The winner of this game wins the ECC Division I title. New London has already clinched a home game in the Class L playoffs, while NFA likely needs a win to qualify. Per The Day's Ned Griffen, NFA would be seeded between fifth and seventh in Class LL with a win, depending on how the other contenders fare. The Whalers enter unbeaten. NFA has played a more challenging schedule, featuring Xavier, Staples and No. 1 Darien. This could be one of the more memorable games in the nation's oldest high school football rivalry, which will be played for the 155th time.

East Lyme at Waterford, 10 a.m.

Records: East Lyme (1-8); Waterford (6-3)

Last week: East Lyme defeated Law 28-14; Waterford lost to New London 34-6

Outlook: The odds are against Waterford qualifying for the Class M playoffs. Still, a win here offers bragging rights and a solid 7-3 season, a drastic improvement on 2015. East Lyme snapped its eight-game losing streak last week and brings some momentum into the game.

    Ledyard at Fitch, 10 a.m.

    Records: Ledyard (3-6, 1-2 ECC Div. 1); Fitch (3-6, 1-2)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: Is this the year, finally, for the Falcons? They haven't beaten Ledyard since Jim Buonocore (now Ledyard's assistant principal and athletic director) was coaching at Fitch. The Falcons have scored 129 more points than Ledyard this season, indicating the Colonel Ledyard Sword may be returning to 101 Groton Long Point Rd.

    Stonington at Westerly, 10 a.m.

    Records: Stonington (5-4); Westerly (5-5)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: The winner secures a winning season, not to mention the satisfaction of winning the nation's oldest Thanksgiving Day game. Westerly has lost two straight, while Stonington, a tri-champion of the ECC's Division II, rebounded from a disappointing loss to Waterford with a solid win over Griswold two weeks ago.

Woodstock at Thames River, 10 a.m.

Records: Woodstock (1-8); Thames River (4-5)

Last week: Woodstock lost to Windham 46-0; Thames River was idle

Outlook: The game is almost secondary to the location. Thames River, a compilation of Norwich Tech, Grasso Tech and St. Bernard, has played its home games at East Lyme High School, but gets to play its first home game ever at Norwich Tech. The Crusaders practice on that field. They can finish .500 with a win.
