Valley/OL advances, but New London and NFA fall in state football playoffs

Quarterback Matt Sapere ran for 187 yards in three touchdowns in the first half and also threw a touchdown pass to Ernest Saint-Pierre as top-seeded Valley Regional/Old Lyme cruised to a 30-12 victory over No. 8 Berlin in a CIAC Class M football playoff quarterfinal round game on Tuesday night.

The Warriors (10-1) will host No. 5 St. Joseph, a 48-21 winner over No. 4 Wolcott, in the semifinals on Monday night.

While Valley/OL cruised, it was a tough night for New London and Norwich Free Academy. The third-seeded Whalers didn't get a first down until the fourth quarter and were routed by No. 6 Notre Dame of West Haven 44-7 in the Class L quarterfinals.

NFA, meanwhile, hung tough with No. 4 Southington, but the Blue Knights scored a late TD to secure a 35-22 win over the No. 5 Wildcats in a Class LL quarterfinal.
