    H.S. roundup: Windham has slim lead at Class S wrestling championships

    Windham — Four-time defending champion Windham has a narrow lead over Haddam-Killingworth, Montville, and Eastern Connecticut Conference champion Ledyard after the first day of competition at the CIAC Class S wrestling championships Friday at Windham.

    Windham has 55 points, followed by H-K (53.5), Montville (53) and Ledyard (52.5). Windham had nine wrestlers reach the championship quarterfinals with four still alive in the consolation rounds. Ledyard and H-K each have nine in the quarterfinals and two in the consolations. Montville has seven in the championship and four in the conslations.

    Top seeds Bo Nguyen (120 pounds) and Dan Contino (220) advanced for Ledyard, as did Collin Crader (170), Jacob Millbach (160), Joseph Millbach (106), Tyler Miller (113), Michael Sullivan (182), Theran Vanase (138) and heavyweight Richard Mullaney.

    Top-seeded Noah Caskey (126) and Joel Morth (132) are among those who moved on for Montville. The others are Emanuel Diaz (182), Jayden Colon (120), Naquia Laracuente (160), Nick Tibbetts (220), and Sam Kury (145).

    Championship quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at all four meets. The championship semifinals are scheduled for 1:30, and the finals at 6:30 p.m.

    In other meets:

    • Top-seeded Jacob Commander (160) is among five to move on to the championship quarterfinals for New London at the Class L meet at Bristol Central. Luis Rodriguez-Veras (170), Xavier Alvarez (132), Renelson Michel (220) and heavyweight Renel Michel also advanced for the Whalers, who are in seventh place (37.5).

    Top-seeded Jarod Kosman (103), Austin Robertson (126), Dakota Grover (195) and Ryan Koehler (182) of Fitch also reached the quarterfinals.

    Bristol Eastern has 12 quarterfinalists and leads the meet with 71 points, followed by New Milford (63) and Hand (51.5).

    •Waterford’s Logan Smith (106), Eric Zane (113) and heavyweight Dylan Zito all moved on to the Class M quarterfinals at Guilford. Alex Brito (220) and heavyweight Roarke Ryan of St. Bernard also reached the quarterfinals. Ellis Tech leads with 65.5 points, followed by Killingly (58.5), Platt (58), and Foran (57). Foran, however, has the most quarterfinalists (10) as well as three in the consolations. Platt has nine in the quarters and three in the consolations, while Ellis Tech has nine and two.

    Boys' basketball

    • Matt Schmeelk had 20 points for Stonington as it beat Wheeler, 70-57, in an ECC interdivision game and qualified for the Class M tournament. Lennox Deer scored 17 for Stonington (8-12). Ryan Dussault had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions (4-15) and Roger Watrous had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Also, Adam Volack scored 12.

    • Edwardo Gonzalez scored 19 and Major Roman had 13 points and 15 rebounds as New London topped Windham, 66-58, in an ECC interdivision game. Melquann Gomez had 18 points for New London (13-5) and Gio Lopez added 10 rebounds. Willie Brown scored 34 for the Whippets.

    • St. Bernard qualified for the CIAC Class S state tournament with a 56-39 win over Bacon Academy. Brian Bergeron had 14 points and Connor Svab scored 13 for St. Bernard (8-11).

    • Jackson Benigni scored 17 as Xavier outlasted East Lyme, 66-58, in double overtime of a non-league game. Kyle Jenkins scored 15 for Xavier (9-10), which outscored the Vikings in the second overtime, 13-5. Dev Ostrowski made seven 3-pointers and scored 25 for East Lyme (10-9) and J.R. Gandenberger added 11 points.

    • Jonah Dupuis scored 19 for Parish Hill in its 67-49 win over Norwich Tech in a Constitution State Conference East Division game. Tommy Lehoux had 15 points for Parish Hill. Jared Neal had a career-high 33 for the Warriors and Jimmy Belisle scored 12.

    • Westbrook led 24-11 after one quarter and went on to beat Old Lyme 83-55 in a Shoreline Conference game. Dean Palenski had 16 points and Graham Aird scored 13 for Old Lyme (4-13, 3-13).

    • Williams School lost to Providence Country Day on Thursday, 79-47. Garrett Matson had 15 points and Eil Griswold scored 12 for Williams.

    Girls' basketball

    Platt Tech beat Norwich Tech, 32-27, in a CSC game. Madison Bodley had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Norwich Tech.

    • Grasso Tech closed out its season on Thursday with a 39-21 loss to Ellis Tech in a CSC East Division game. Lindsey Murray led Grasso (0-20, 0-12) with 12 points.
