H.S. roundup: St. Bernard girls advance to ECC Div. II final

Plainfield — St. Bernard School advanced to the final of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II girls' basketball tournament on Saturday.

And the Saints did so without Caitlyn Dittman's usual offensive output. Junior Briana Beverly stepped up with a 14-point performance which helped spark the second-seeded Saints to a 33-24 win over No. 3 Lyman Memorial in a semifinal on Saturday afternoon. The Saints (17-5) play No. 4 Woodstock Academy in the tournament final Wednesday at NFA at 5:30 p.m. Woodstock beat ECC Division III champion and top-seeded Windham 62-50 in the other semifinal.

Dittman, a senior, was held to seven points but did have 15 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.

"(Lyman) double-teamed Dittman and as soon as she got the ball there would be three people on her,'' said St. Bernard coach Mike Nystrom. "They did a good job against her.''

Beverly had 10 of her points in the first half as the Saints took a 16-13 halftime lead. Lyman led 24-20 after three quarters but the Saints sealed the win by outscoring Lyman 13-4 in the fourth quarter.

"We had a bad third quarter,'' said Nystrom. "Then we started pressing them. We pressed them man-to-man and it seemed to jumpstart us a little too. We got them away from their offense a little.''

St. Bernard and Woodstock didn't meet in the regular season, but Nystrom has seen the Centaurs play three times.

"They're athletic, they have good size and they're tough inside,'' said Nystrom. "They're bigger than we are outside of Dittman and they've got a couple of shooters. We're going to have to play pretty well to beat them.''

And having Beverly contribute could go a long way in that direction.

"This helps Bri, this is her second good game in a row,'' said Nystrom. "She's playing with more confidence. And we need her and the other players to play well in order to win.''
