    H.S. softball: Fitch outlasts Waterford in high-scoring matchup

    Waterford — Jo Hobert had three hits, including a double and a three-run home run, and scored three times as the Fitch High School softball team beat Waterford 11-8 Friday.

    Rylee MacMillan had two hits, including a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the sixth inning that gave Fitch a 7-5 lead. Cassie Woods (two hits, run) followed with an RBI double.

    Nicole Vignato also had two hits and scored for the Falcons (7-3).

    Ciana Chiappone had four hits, including three doubles, with three RBI and two runs for Waterford (8-2). Also, Rachel Miller had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Chloe McCue had two doubles and an RBI and Madison Nott had two hits and scored.

    In other games:

    • St. Bernard built a 5-1 lead and held on for a 5-4 victory over Bacon Academy. Emily Nelson went 3-for-4 and scored three runs for the Saints (6-2) while Shania Riviere was 2-for-4 with two runs, Sarah Brown had two hits, Sophie Nelson had a two-run double and Briana Beverly doubled.

    • Madison Sanborn pitched a two-hitter and struck out 12 as Ledyard rolled to a 13-1 nonleague win over Old Lyme. Riley Pratt led the Colonels (5-6) offensively by going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and an RBI while Larissa Topalis was 3-for-4 with a two-run triple, RBI double and three runs, Jenna Topalis drove in two runs with a triple and Brooke Carrender was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs. Maddie Cann doubled for Old Lyme.

    • Erin McBride was 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBI as Norwich Tech defeated Ellis Tech 15-0 in the Constitution State Conference East Division. Vanessa Gumbs added three runs, three runs and three RBI with a double while Madison Bodley had two hits and three RBI and winning pitcher Hannah Smith had seven strikeouts.
