    H.S. football / Week 3 preview capsules

    Friday's Games

    NFA at Ledyard, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: NFA (1-1, 0-0 ECC Div. 1); Ledyard (1-1, 0-0)

Last week: NFA lost to Cheshire 35-29; Ledyard lost to Creed/Career/Whitney Tech 32-14

Outlook: A difficult assignment this week for Ledyard: How to stop NFA quarterback Shea McManaway? In the first two weeks, McManaway has thrown for nearly 800 yards, leading to 60 points against quality competition: Xavier and Cheshire. McManaway has thrown touchdown passes to four different receivers already: Jahiem Spruill, Nolan Molkenthin, Tyler Briggs and Kevin Pomroy. Ledyard, meanwhile, lost some of the momentum it gained with the victory at Windham with last week's loss Creed/Career/Whitney Tech.

Bacon Academy at New London, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Bacon (0-2); New London (1-1)

Last week: Bacon lost to Plainfield 20-14; New London lost to Masuk 50-0

Outlook: The Whalers suffered one of the most lopsided losses in program history last week. Things figure to improve here, given that Masuk is a top 10 team in the state and Bacon isn't. Still, New London needs to run the ball better and protect sophomore quarterback Owen George. The Whalers had difficulty moving the ball last week.

East Lyme at Stonington, 6:30 p.m.

Records: East Lyme (1-1); Stonington (0-1)

Last week: East Lyme defeated Stratford 29-14; Stonington lost to Killingly 41-0

Outlook: It was an encouraging week for the Vikings, who evened their record with an impressive win over Stratford. They have a threat at running back in Isaac Tomblin, who should get significant attention from Stonington's defense. The Bears, who didn't play the first week of the season, opened at Killingly last week. They had 121 yards of offense.

    Montville at Fitch, 6:30 p.m.

    Records: Montville (2-0); Fitch (2-0)

Last week: Montville defeated Woodstock 49-6; Fitch defeated Notre Dame of West Haven 27-20

Outlook: The feature game of the week between two of the ECC's surprise teams. Montville is unbeaten and still hasn't played a home game. Fitch defeated a brand name last week. Which program can handle the most prosperity? Tune into theday.com for live audio of the game to find out. This is The Day's "WiredZone" game of the week. Full highlights and sounds of the game from Fitch coach Mike Ellis and Montville's Tanner Grove will be available.

    Saturday's game

    Coginchaug/Hale-Ray at Valley/Old Lyme, 1 p.m.

    Records: Coginchaug/Hale-Ray (2-0, 2-0 Pequot Sassacus); Valley/OL  (2-0, 2-0)

    Last week: Coginchaug/Hale Ray defeated Haddam-Killingworth 34-26; Valley/OL defeated Morgan 48-7

Outlook: This is the Valley/Old Lyme's annual game played at Old Lyme. And it's a good one. The winner remains in first place in the Sassacus Division of the Pequot Conference. Valley/Old Lyme's defense allowed two total yards last week, while quarterback Michael Cullina completed 8 of 9 passes for 159 yards and two TDs.
