    H.S. roundup: Top-seeded New London girls cruise in ECC semis

    New London — Top-seeded New London began defense of its Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I girls' basketball tournament title with a 71-17 win over No. 8 Fitch in a quarterfinal on Thursday night.

    Spencer Roman had 19 points and Xaryia Melendez scored 11 for New London (21-0), which plays No. 4 Stonington in a semifinal Saturday at Norwich Free Academy at 4:30 p.m. Charlotte Carney led Fitch (2-19) with five points.

    Stonington eliminated No. 5 East Lyme 47-35. 

    In other ECC tournament games:

    • Bella Graziano scored 16 points to lead No. 2 NFA to a 58-19 win over No. 7 Ledyard in a Division I quarterfinal. Jenissa Verela had nine points for NFA (12-9), which led 20-2 after one quarter. NFA plays No. 6 Bacon Academy in a semifinal on Saturday at NFA at 6:30 p.m. Jade Langworthy scored 11 points for Ledyard (9-12). 

    • Marilyn Childs scored 17 points as No. 4 Waterford beat No. 5 St. Bernard 54-17 in the Division II quarterfinals. Julianna Bonilla and Amy Pinch had six points each for Waterford (12-9), which led 17-0 after one quarter and 28-8 at halftime. Waterford plays No. 1 Plainfield in Saturday's semifinals at NFA at 2 p.m. Carly Potts led St. Bernard (8-13) with nine points.

    • Montville's season came to an end with a 27-22 loss to top-seeded Plainfield in the Division II quarterfinals. Emily Meigs had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Indians, who finish 7-15, while Emmiley Genua added nine points, five rebounds and three steals.

    Girls' basketball

    • Grasso Tech ended its season with a 75-7 loss to Putnam in a nonleague game. Morgan McNeil led Grasso (1-18) with three points. 

    Boys' basketball

    • Trevor Hutchins had 30 points and 17 rebounds as Ledyard jumped out to a 19-8 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 83-48 win over Bacon Academy. Devin Rickerson added 13 points, Ken Turner had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists, and E.J. Ahlborn had 11 rebounds for the Colonels (10-7).

    • Bowen Baker had 17 points and seven rebounds to highlight Wheeler's 55-43 non-conference loss to Putnam. Ian Spracklin added 14 points and six rebounds for the Lions (2-17).

    • Brandon Mayersohn scored 23 points as Norwich Tech defeated Cheney Tech 67-49 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Don Duca added 14 for the Warriors (6-13).

    Riflery

    • Grasso Tech handed Montville its first loss of the season, 886-854. Thomas Riffe led Grasso (3-1) with a 1882, Elijah Hauser shot 181, Alex Potchniak had 179 and Emma Welch and Briana Dow both shot 172. Ethan Coillard led Montville (3-1) with a 185, Daniel Hollingsworth shot 179, Tanner Driscoll shot 178, Brittany Andrews had 167 and Kasl Siismets had 145.

    Hockey

    • The Eastern CT Eagles won their fourth straight game, beating Sheehan 3-1 on Wednesday night. Evan Tower had a pair of assists, Ryan Huta, Jake Verbridge and Kevin Close had goals, Rylin Fowler made 19 saves and Kyle Jacobson had an assist for the Eagles (11-2-2).
