    ECC baseball: No. 11 St. Bernard surprises No. 6 Montville 3-1

    Montville — St. Bernard pulled off the biggest surprise on the opening day of the Eastern Connecticut Conference baseball tournament, upsetting No. 6 Montville 3-1 on Tuesday in the first round.

    The game was called after five innings because of rain.

    The 11th-seeded Saints will play No. 3 Griswold, which received a first-round bye, in Wednesday's quarterfinals at 4 p.m. at Waterford. Host Waterford, the No. 2 seed, will play No. 10 Stonington at 7 p.m.

    The other quarterfinal doubleheader will be played at Fitch and feature No. 4 Plainfield against No. 5 East Lyme at 4 p.m., and top-seeded Bacon Academy against No. 8 Ledyard at 7.

    Max Adams allowed only two hits over five innings for the Saints (11-10) and struck out four. He also had a double while Hunter Baillargeon and Cole Potts each had a hit and scored a run.

    Doug Delacruz allowed only four hits for the Indians (14-6) in suffering the loss. He also struck out four.

    In other games:

    • Ken Turner pitched a three-hitter as Ledyard beat Fitch 4-3. Turner struck out 10 with one walk and was also 2-for-2 with two RBI. Cade Walters was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Ledyard (12-9). Joe Vignato and Nick Helbig each had a hit and scored a run for Fitch (13-8) and Vignato drove in a run.

    • East Lyme scored 10 runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 13-2 victory over New London in a five-inning game. Matt Malcom led the Vikings' 13-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI while Owen Robbins was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI, Drew Menghi had two hits and two RBI and Trystan Levesque was 2-for-3. Dan Allard worked four innings for the win for East Lyme (11-10). Robert Otanez had a pair of hits for the Whalers (10-10).

    • Adam Gibbs pitched a two-hitter and R.J. Parrilla hit a grand slam as defending champion Stonington defeated Lyman Memorial 6-0. Kevin Ferrer added a solo homer for the Bears (9-12).
