East Lyme, Stonington back to defend ECC indoor titles

The boys' and girls' indoor track teams from East Lyme and Stonington high schools compiled points readily enough last year to pull off sweeps in their respective Eastern Connecticut Conference championship meets.

East Lyme swept the ECC Division I meet for the fourth straight season, with the boys topping second-place Norwich Free Academy 156-103 and the girls also beating NFA 172-98.

Stonington's boys scored 175 points to 92 for runner-up Windham in the Division II meet and the girls' team won 135-82 over Griswold.

Can those teams keep all the championship banners for themselves once again?

They will if East Lyme's Sam Whittaker and Stonington's Rhys Hammond have anything to say about it. Each of the local runners is the top seed in three different events headed into Saturday's meets at Coast Guard Academy. The Division I meet is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the Division II meet at 4 p.m.

Whittaker, a senior, is the top seed in the 1,000 (2:36.65), 1,600 (4:26.08) and the 3,200 (9:35.98), with long-distance counterpart Chris Abbey, an East Lyme junior, seeded second in the 1,000 and the 1,600. Whittaker and Abbey were both members of the Vikings' Class MM championship team during cross country season.

Also in the Division I meet, NFA's Jahiem Spruill is the top seed in the boys' high jump (6-2) and long jump (22-1.5). Ally Lewis, also from NFA, is ranked first, as well, in the girls' high jump (5-4) and long jump (17-4.75).

Hammond, a Stonington junior, is the No. 1 seed in the boys' 600 (1:24.75), 1,000 (2:31.85) and 1,600 (4:26.11) at the Division II meet. Also among local runners, Stonington's Lindsey Orr is seeded first in the 1,000 (3:07.43) and 1,600 (5:22.03).
