Special ed statement has her concerned

I am writing in response to the article "East Lyme's school business manager hired by Groton Public Schools," (Jan. 13). In it were words every special needs parent dreads each year when budgets come out.

The school business manager, Don Meltabarger, discussed possible savings for Groton, including transportation for special education students, along with lighting, Internet access and phone systems.

Meltabarger, you state that you are a good listener, well listen now. My son has autism, and he relies on special education transportation. He cannot be on a bus with neuro-typical children. He cannot handle the stimulation. He would have a meltdown, and I also fear bullying. All the gains we have made with him could go backwards just over this issue.

My son deserves the right to have access to an education that any other neuro-typical child has access to, even if it means having to adapt to his needs. Why is it always that the first in any kind of "change" or budget cuts must the special needs programming? I hope you are listening Mr. Meltabarger, because if you don't, you will get to know me, and my voice, very well.
