Testing reward policy was stressful and wrong

I revealed in the late spring of 2013 the details of a deeply problematic unwritten policy existing at Jennings Elementary School that had support from its then principal and by inaction the previous superintendent. This policy excluded students from an annual CMT Carnival if they did not display "enough effort" while taking the state standardized tests.

Students around the country, including my own, experience physical ailments each year from the amount of stress placed on them regarding these tests. If a student becomes overwhelmed while taking them, they could react in many ways, including not displaying "enough effort" resulting in their public embarrassment and exclusion from this school-wide event. It's even used when parents decide to opt out their child from testing. I found this to be absolutely wrong and worked hard to fix it.

I'm happy to report the policy has been erased with both of its main supporters now moved on. After a year and a half of pushing, we can now celebrate. Today I write to commend Chief Academic Officer Kate Ericson and (new) Jennings Principal Maribel Olivero for taking action to remove an abusive practice from school policies and protect the mental welfare of our students.
