    Don't open Seaside to development

The debate about the future of the Seaside property continues.

Despite the inability to gain approval for zone changes that would allow for an inn, conference center and event venue, elected officials (First Selectman Dan Steward, Rep. Kathleen McCarty and Sen. Paul Formica) are pushing the idea of a public-private partnership.

Such use would dominate this natural waterfront habitat and lead to the commercial-type activities that received loud opposition during previous hearings regarding Mark Steiner's proposed development of the property. Passive recreational usage and the restoration of the seawall in a way that supports the protection and development of natural habitats would be the least intrusive and most cost effective way to provide the public waterfront access to Long Island Sound. DEEP is listening.
