Treatment of Vietnam veterans is not exaggerated

    xxxxx

I am responding to the letter, “Vietnam vet treatment is often exaggerated,” (March 15). I am married to one of those veterans.

Upon returning to upstate New York for his father's funeral my husband experienced severe contempt from a college professor sitting next to him on the (commercial) plane. Further looks of contempt, hatred, and anger toward him personally were often received. A friend of his who flew (commercially) to the Midwest for his mother's funeral experienced similar behavior, people spitting on his car, and horribly cruel remarks.

Implying that this treatment was exaggerated is analogous to saying there was no Holocaust in Europe. Today's more supportive behavior toward the military is a direct result of this kind of treatment Vietnam Vets endured. Those who serve in the military take an oath to do so. Unless you lived through it, my friend, you have no idea what these men and women experienced.
