    Thomas' bigotory disguised as morality

It didn't take long for the first absurdly ludicrous reaction to the Supreme Court ruling concerning same sex marriage to appear in The Day, and leave it to Cal Thomas, “Same-sex marriage is only the beginning,” (June 30).

So Cal, how do you justify discriminating against people because of the way they were born? Do your religious beliefs condone discriminating against people with Down syndrome, autism or maybe cerebral palsy? How about their race? It was once common in this country to do just that, Jim Crow laws.

Most Americans support equal rights for same-sex individuals. And no, Christianity isn't under attack. A defense of equal protection under the law is supported. The Constitution protects your right to practice and hold dear your religion; it also prohibits the use of it as a force of law. Your opinions would serve you well in the army of ISIS. It is no matter however, that even if a majority of constituents support discrimination, our Constitution protects those minorities from the tyranny of the majority.

The most disturbing suggestions from your commentary purport to disguise bigotry behind a curtain of morality. Being religious is not a license to hate, or require the rest of us to defer to such invidious behavior.
