Focus should return to teacher quality

It was of interest to read the article, “Poll: Schools too focused on tests,” (Aug. 24) about the recent survey that reports that too much emphasis has been placed on the standardized testing procedures to improve or increase the scoring results of the educational system in our schools. The values that I have seen in the local newspapers are not impressive and one would have to agree that the current improved testing techniques have not been that effective. The survey results favor “overwhelmingly” that the best method to improve student scores is by obtaining and improving teacher quality. We old timers, I'm sure most would agree, are well aware of the importance of quality teachers to the well-being of students in the pursuit of the future. The federal policy of No Child Left Behind, supporting these views on testing should be revisited and updated to include teacher qualification upgrades, and to reduce the studies that are impacting standardized testing evaluations.
