Congress needs unity on gun control

What a wonderful letter by Dr. Perry, “A new definition for pro-life,” (Oct 3). Don’t think I ever heard the explicit distinction between pro-birth and pro-life.

The only thing missing from his thoughtful, comprehensive, compassionate list of stances for those who are truly pro-life, was opposition to the National Rifle Association’s position on gun control. The Day covered that by its political cartoon and editorial on the same page. What will it take for us as a nation to wake up and implement laws making it harder for anyone with a grudge to purchase guns? What gives the NRA such obstructive power? When the Constitution was written, no one could foresee automatic weapons that when combined with modern media and the Internet, can easily stimulate such beastly copycat crimes.

We lose so many more people to domestic terrorists than foreign ones. The best medicine is preventive medicine. It would be a blessing for all of us if Congress could unite on the issue of more rational gun control.

    Dr. Daniel E. Bendor
