Vogel a commander not consensus guy

I must respond to the letter, “For needed changed NL should elect Vogel,” (Oct. 7), saying New London should vote for Bill Vogel as he is a "consensus builder." Mr. Vogel is a retired flag officer from the U.S. Navy. Over the years I have interacted with many of these folks and somehow never met a consensus builder. These folks are by design, decision makers and trained to put ordnance on target. They live by the Navy's golden rule which is, "He Who Has The Most Gold Rules."

It is counter intuitive for ship drivers to have everyone come to the bridge to discuss whether we should steer to port or starboard. A great leader I am sure but if you are looking for a consensus builder you will be disappointed. His anti-union stance which he took early on doesn't look like consensus building to me. His statement that Chief Ackley can be talked into doing the right thing for the city is naïve. If he thought Navy politics were tough, he hasn't seen anything yet. Stand by for heavy rolls!
