Solution to long lines: Privatize the DMV

The editorial, “What’s taking so long at the DMV?,” (Nov. 16), concerning long lines and 95-minute waiting times for service at Motor Vehicle Offices, honestly struck me as funny.

Ever since license plates and driver licenses were invented, state departments of motor vehicles by their nature and definition have been inefficient. Any adult who has ever had to use DMV services is only too well aware of the exasperating failure of this state run agency to provide a competent and caring public service.

If you want, in The Day's own words to get "the blankety blank system fixed," then privatize it.

Before moving to Connecticut I lived in New Hampshire, where indeed the state has allowed privately run DMV offices to run and flourish for many years. I can tell you from personal experience, the usual registration or title workup will have you in the door and out again in less than 15 minutes; a driver’s license new or renewed in five minutes.

Just imagine three or four franchise offices in each of Norwich, Groton, and New London; at no financial cost to the state. Let the marketplace assume this public service, and what a wonderful way to fill several of the many vacant storefronts in our neighboring cities.
