North Stonington school costs crushing the taxpayers

So North Stonington, in its infinite wisdom, is again bringing a new school building proposal to the taxpayers. They would like to spend $38.2 million on this project. They think that the state will allot the town more than $16 million; this from a state that is billions of dollars in debt and cannot even fund its pet project, New London Magnet Schools.

We are living in a "Field of Dreams" here. For some reason the selectmen and the Permanent School Building Committee think, "If they build it, they will come." When looking for a home, most young families look for affordability and proximity to employment. We don't have that in North Stonington.

Here is the crux of the matter; we have 182 students in the high school. Our entire student population is less than 800 students in the entire district. We cannot afford to build this school building.

In addition to this, we are being asked for another $2.5 million for the Emergency Services Center. I'm not sure how this can be supported with such a small population and no business or industry.

I think it's time we start to think with our heads instead of our hearts. It's time for another alternative.
