Submarine Century section had glaring omission

"Connecticut's Submarine Century" left the dock without all the passengers aboard.

The omission of the role of Fort Trumbull in submarine warfare in the April 10, Submarine Century enclosure was stunning. We might gloss over the early sonar and antisubmarine warfare work at Fort Trumbull going back to 1917, but leaving out the role of the Navy's Sound Laboratory, established in 1941, was a disservice to all those who worked at the "Sound Lab" over six decades. Perhaps the special section should have been named "Connecticut's Submarine Construction Century" because it seemed to ignore the technologies that allowed the submarine to execute its warfare mission successfully. There is no question that the roles of Electric Boat and the Submarine Base were vitally important, but without the evolution of sonar and radio communications, the submarine would not be as effective a warfare platform as it now is.

The Day and Electric Boat might refer to John Merrill's 1994 book, "Fort Trumbull and the Submarine" for a history lesson in this regard. On the other hand, maybe the sages of New London would like to forget their mistake in giving up the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, as it is now known, and all the jobs that left with it for Newport.
