More school choice would improve education

Tears and Anger in Groton,” (April 20) would be a suitable headline for a photo of a baby throwing a tantrum, not supposed adults asked to trim the lavish $75 million plus education budget! Councilor Karen Morton understands that struggling homeowners and retirees on fixed incomes are the real victims, being forced out of their homes by exorbitant property taxes; any tears for them?

It is long past time to bring the mediocre government school system to heel. Our country spends more on education than nearly every other developed nation, yet produces students that rank dismally in academic achievement. Consumers will never get much for their money when a government monopoly colludes with left-wing unions.

President Trump’s stellar education secretary, Betsy DeVos is a giant step toward progress! She is not beholden to corrupt teacher unions that donated $33 million, 93 percent to Democrats in the election, a losing gamble with funds extorted from union members. Democrats have been denying minorities a decent education since Gov. George Wallace blocked the schoolhouse door. The only hope poor kids have is a Catholic or private school education like the children of elitist politicians who hypocritically oppose school choice and vouchers.
