    No shortage of NL Democrats

I read the editorial “This job takes guts” (July 12) and have a few comments regarding the sentence, “The town committees of both major parties say they are short of people to run for local office, with just days to go before they are supposed to select candidates.”

The New London Democratic Town Committee does not lack for candidates for the November election. A 10-person nominating committee has been interviewing candidates for two months. Each of the 19 candidates interviewed submitted a two-page document outlining pertinent bio facts, reasons for seeking office and goals if elected. The candidate split is nine for the City Council and 10 for the Board of Education. Three people indicated interest but later withdrew.

The nominating committee will meet next week to select seven names for both council and board to place in nomination at the July 25 Democratic Town Committee meeting. Nominations from the floor will also be in order.

The New London Democratic Party is alive and well when one considers we hold 13 of the 14 possible seats, numerous positions on boards and commissions, and have a 60-member town committee with many of those same people holding positions on various not-for-profit groups.
