    Another street needs speed control

Regarding a recent column and commentaries about New London speed traps, “A New London welcome: Speed trap” (Aug. 30), how about spending some of that grant money where residents daily risk their lives trying to back out of their driveways and cross the street safely, namely upper Gardner Avenue? People drive pedal-to-the-metal up and down this street all day long. I'm guessing many are Electric Boat folks, but I have also seen school and SEAT busses going as fast as they can as well. Sidewalks on one side only, no crosswalks, and a stop sign that does nothing to slow these people down until they are right on top of it aren't helping the situation.

Now that there will be more construction between Niles Hill Road and Ocean Beach, I can see this only getting worse. There are new babies and young children to be kept safe here. When will the city step in to help ensure this? A wandering coyote minding his own business got police patrols down here in a heartbeat. Let's see how long it takes to get the real neighborhood menace under control.
