Suggested new take on 'Auld Lang Syne'

Please explain the song "Auld Lang Syne," I can't. "Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?"

"Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne?" What’s a lang syne?

“We'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne." What’s a cup of kindness?

Let’s all try an update for next year. Here is mine.

Should old friends be remembered with smiles when brought to mind?

Should old friends be remembered with happy thoughts defined?

So let’s lift a glass, to salute the past, and leave any bad thoughts behind.

While we all cheer being here and make the coming year more kind.

Robert A Manfredi

Montville

Editor's note: Auld Lang Syne translates to "old long since," meaning days gone by.
