Home show sets the stage for remodeling, if and when winter gives way to spring

A crew from Overhead Door Company of Norwich sets up a display of garage doors Friday at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa in Groton, where the Eastern Connecticut Premier Home Show will take place this weekend.

Groton - This winter's excesses, from bitter cold to boundless snow, could be a boon for the home-remodeling industry in the region by the time spring arrives and homeowners have a chance to assess the damages.

And for those looking to get a jump start on home improvements, Eastern Connecticut's Premier Home Show starting today at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa offers the choice of a wide range of products and services for virtually any job.

This year's show, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and the same hours Sunday, features free admission.

"This year's home show is really about showcasing the region's remodeling professionals," said Tony Sheridan, president and chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut, in a statement. "We are lucky to have some truly talented individuals in our area who can help upgrade your home inside and out. It's a great way to boost the local economy, too."

Among the show's highlights are free appraisals of home items by Russ Antiques and Auctions. One attendee will win a seven-day cruise for two to the Bahamas.

The show is presented by the chamber and the Builders & Remodelers Association of Eastern Connecticut. Sponsors are Overhead Door Co. of Norwich, Green Earth Energy Photovoltaic, Connecticut Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative and A Beautiful Company General Contractors in New London.

Free seminars include presentations today on getting organized, 10 a.m.; solar homes, noon, and low-maintenance gardening, 3 p.m. Sunday seminars include a talk on generators, 11 a.m.; finding a remodeler, 2 p.m., and credit do's and don'ts, 3 p.m. The Eastern Connecticut Association of Realtors will provide information about homebuying at 11 a.m. today and noon Sunday.
