    Local college roundup: Coast Guard men's basketball wins a Classic

    Weston, Mass. - Kevin Alvarez finished with career highs of 18 points and nine rebounds Saturday and David Anderson had his second consecutive double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team to a 59-47 win over Regis in the Moe's Queso Classic championship game.

    Alvarez was named MVP of the tournament and Anderson joined him on the all-tournament team.

    Alvarez was 8-for-13 shooting, with two 3-pointers, and added two blocked shots for the Bears (3-1), who put the game away with a 14-0 run in the second half that pushed the lead to 53-32.

    Coast Guard, which defeated Framingham State 56-33 in the first round of the tournament Friday behind a career-best 16 points from Eli Sponseller, has won three games in row for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The Bears play again Wednesday at Salve Regina.

    In other games:

    • Fork Union Military (Va.) handed St. Thomas More its first loss, defeating the Chancellors 83-62 in the National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus in New Haven. E.J. Crawford led St. Thomas More (4-1) with 16 points, while Sterling Taplan added 12 points, Ryan Funk eight points and seven rebounds and C.J. Byrd seven points.

    • Keith Porter had 21 points 15 rebouinds, four steals and five assists in UConn-Avery Point's 61-54 overtime loss to Northern Essex. Ibo Rivera added 13 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for the Pointers (2-5).

    Women's basketball

    • Mairead Hynes had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Connecticut College to a 75-64 win over Roger Williams. Liz Malman added 15 points and three steals for the Camels (3-0), while Carlee Smith had 11 points and eight assists, Jenna Lovett 10 points and seven rebounds and Shaniqua Shaw eight points and 12 rebounds.

    • UMass Dartmouth made eight 3-pointers in the first half to build a 13-point lead and the unbeaten Corsairs (4-0) went on to defeat Coast Guard 68-58. Dani Knox scored a career-high 23 points for the Bears (1-2) and also had nine rebounds, while Meghan Fornaro finished with 17 points and five rebounds.

    Men's hockey

    • No. 3 Boston University survived a late rally by UConn and went on to a 5-2 victory over the Huskies in a Hockey East game before 7,712 at the XL Center in Hartford. UConn (3-6-4, 2-3-1) scored two goals within a 57-second span in the third period to pull within 3-2, but the Terriers (8-1-1, 6-1-1) scored two goals in the final 2:34, including an empty netter, to pull away. Cody Sharib and Corey Ronan scored for UConn, which was outshot 30-22.

    • Middlebury held off Conn College for a 3-2 victory in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Panthers (1-1-2, 1-1-2) build a 3-0 lead before surrendering third-period goals to the Camels' Joe Giordano and Joe Birmingham. Goalie Tom Conlin made 29 saves for Conn (1-3, 1-3), which was outshot 32-25.

    Women's hockey

    • Goalie Katherine Chester stopped 24 shots as Conn College blanked Hamilton 4-0 in the NESCAC. Freshman Kate Kohl scored a pair of goals for the Camels (2-0-2, 2-0-2) while Julie Beattie added a goal and an assist and Steph Izzi had an empty-net goal.

    Cross country

    • Eastern Connecticut State University's Lee Cattanach, a junior from New London and The Williams School, finished 78th in the NCAA Division III Championship race at Kings Island Golf Center in Mason, Ohio. Cattanach was timed in 25:08 over the 8K course. In the women's race, Conn College's Ashley Curran placed 90th, finishing the 6K course in 23:10.

    Women's swimming

    • Conn College, ranked 18th in the latest Division III poll, cruised to a 190-90 victory over Coast Guard. The Camels had five swimmers win two events apiece - All-American Sam Pierce in the 100-yard freestyle (54.91) and 200 free (1:58.32), Emma Rotner in the 500 free (5:22.51) and 1,000 free (11:10.89), Sarah Nappo in the 100 backstroke (1:01.32) and 200 back (2:15.81), Katie Edwards in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.96) and 200 breast (2:20.06) and Valerie Urban in the 200 butterfly (2:13.34) and 200 individual medley (2:09.49). Coast Guard's Sara Cantrell won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

    Men's swimming

    • No. 16 Conn College topped Coast Guard 180-80, notching 11 victories, including three invividual wins by freshman George Tilneac (200 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly). Mace Molina (500, 1,000 freestyles) and Drake Freiberg (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke) added two individual events each for Conn. Christian Brindamour won the 50 and 100 freestyles for Coast Guard and Andy Anderson took the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
