    Local college roundup: CGA women upset Wheaton 72-65

    Norton, Mass. - Torie Sutherland scored a game-high 21 points as the Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team knocked off first-place Wheaton 72-65 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game Saturday.

    Meghan Fornaro had 20 points and six assists and freshmen Gill Gerton (eight rebounds) and Alexi Howland had 10 points each for Coast Guard (11-7, 6-4), which has won four straight. Rebecca Arnone led Wheaton (13-6, 9-2) with 18 points.

    In other games:

    • Denisha Parks scored 27 points and had 12 rebounds, leading Elms to a 95-48 win over Mitchell College in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Diamond Thomas had 13 points and four steals, Dazjavia Williams had eight rebounds and Jessica Shepherd scored 12 for Mitchell (5-10, 5-4). Samantha Ryan of Quaker Hill came off the bench to score nine points with 11 rebounds for Mitchell.

    Men's basketball

    • Parris Hill scored 22 points and had nine rebounds, leading Mitchell College to an 86-72 win over first-place Elms in a NECC game. Mitchell (7-9, 5-4) led 44-27 at halftime. Donavan McClean scored 20 points, Joshua Ford had 11 rebounds, Devonta Mosley scored 14 and Frank Martin had 11 points for Mitchell. Kenny Lockett had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Elms (9-8, 8-1).

    • St. Thomas More beat Northfield-Mt. Hermon 86-76. Stephen Millhaven and Sterling Taplan scored 14 points each and Christian Vital had 11 points.

    • Wheaton snapped a nine-game losing streak with an 80-68 win over Coast Guard in a NEWMAC game. Kevin Alvarez had 13 points and seven rebounds and David Anderson, Micah Baldez and Mark Krebs scored 11 each for Coast Guard (5-14, 1-7).

    • Bates outscored Connecticut College 41-27 in the second half, pulling away for a 76-61 win in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Zuri Pavlin had 14 points and nine rebounds, Daniel Janel scored 10 and Alex Tonhazy had eight rebounds for Conn (7-11, 0-6).

    Men's swimming

    • Connecticut College, ranked 20th in Division III, beat Bates 156-124. Freshman George Tilneac won three events and Loring Bowen, Trebor Lawton and Matt Delaporte won two events each for Conn. Bowen won the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.65) and 200 backstroke (1:56.57), Lawton won the 50 backstroke (24.30) and 100 freestyle (48.39), Delaporte won the 200 breaststroke (2:13.49) and 1,000 freestyle (10:09.44) and Tilneac won three events, the 200 butterfly (1:53.95), 200 IM (1:57.55) and 500 freestyle (4:52.02). Niko Brosnihan won the 50 freestyle and teamed with Carson Owlett, Lawton and Tilneac to win the 200 freestyle relay.

    Women's swimming

    • No. 18 Connecticut College beat Wellesley 163-125 and lost to No. 17 Bates 180-106. Conn's Sam Pierce won the 100 freestyle (53.17) and 200 freestyle (1:56.24). Other winners for Conn included Rachel Wilson, Valerie Urban, Katie Edwards and the 4x400 relay team of Sarah Nappo, Edwards, Anna Peterson and Pierce.

    Men's hockey

    • Connecticut College scored in each period, picking up a 3-0 win over Middlebury in the NESCAC. Joe Giordano, Tim DiPretoro and Adam Patel scored and Tom Conlin made 16 saves for Conn (8-7-2, 5-5-1). Ryan Mowery, Brian Belisle, JC Cangelosi, Will Leedy and Marc Roper had assists for the Camels.

    Women's track

    • Connecticut College freshman Mary Goulding set a school record in the 60-meter dash, running a 7.93 at the Boston University Terrier Classic.

    Men's track

    • Connecticut College's 4x400-meter relay team set a school record at the Boston University Terrier Classic. Aidan Cort, Alex McGurk, Christian Whitaker and Andrew Peterson ran a 3:29.33.
