State reopens swim area at Rocky Neck State Park

East Lyme — The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reopened a section of beach at Rocky Neck State Park for swimming Saturday after conducting follow-up water tests.

A section of beach at the east end of the park was closed Thursday due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

In a news release Saturday morning, DEEP said it also has reopened swim areas at Hammonasset State Park in Madison and Silver Sands State Park in Milford that had been closed due to bacteria.

The agency said the swimming areas at Gardner Lake in Salem and Wadsworth Falls State Park in Middletown are closed due to test results showing high bacteria counts. The water at both locations will be retested Wednesday, and results will be announced Thursday.

Additionally, swim areas at  Indian Well State Park in Shelton and Kettletown State Park in Southbury are closed due to the presence of toxic blue green algae, and will stay closed until the algae subsides.
