Route 1 in Old Saybrook to see 5-day detour for bridge work

The state Department of Transportation has announced that Route 1 in Old Saybrook will be closed and a detour will be in place from 7 p.m. Sept. 29 to 5 a.m. Oct. 4 as DOT works to replace the Route 1 bridge over Center Brook.

Route 1, just east of Route 166, will be detoured while the existing bridge is demolished and a new bridge is constructed, DOT said in a news release.

The construction project calls for the "replacement of the bridge with a precast box culvert and precast wingwalls," according to the news release. The project will begin with the relocation of existing utilities and the reconstruction of the east and west approaches to the bridge. It will include drainage and roadway improvements, as well as improvements to signalization at the intersection of Route 1 and Center Road.

The project was awarded to LaRosa Earth Group LLC for $1,079,219.40 and is slated to be completed Nov. 16, according to DOT.
