United Way funds 2 New London programs

New London — Two city organizations will be better able to help New London County residents improve their financial stability, thanks to grants the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut has handed out.

According to the United Way, Safe Futures received $16,000 for its Career Support Program, which helps increase the workforce readiness and income levels of victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and trafficking. Higher Edge’s Success Program additionally received $7,000 for tailored mentoring that helps low-income and/or first generation college students stay on track.

Each program will get the funding for a year and will have to provide regular updates on accomplishments. Representatives of the programs also will meet periodically with United Way volunteer Community Investment Teams to discuss strategies and progress.

According to the 2016 ALICE Report, 33 percent of households in New London County couldn’t afford basic needs such as housing, child care, food, health care and transportation. United Way made this grant opportunity available in part because of the findings of that report.
